Neuroendocrine carcinoma cases, more frequent in the gastro-intestinal and pulmonary tract, have rarely been reported also in other areas, including the genito-urinary system. The majority of genitourinary neuroendocrine carcinomas occur in the bladder, being upper urinary tract neuroendocrine carcinoma rare. Approximately 50 cases of urothelial carcinoma with neuroendocrine differentiation have been reported in the literature since the first case was described in 19861. The diagnosis and staging of upper urinary tract cancer are challenging due to the need for small, atraumatic instrumentation to access the ureter and renal pelvis. In terms of prognosis, staging at the diagnosis appears to correlate with survival as the median survival for pT1-T2 patients is 31 months versus 8 months for pT3-pT4 disease1.
