This paper announces to the readership of the «Cronache Ercolanesi» specifically interested in Epicureanism the recent discovery of a very refined white marble bust of a Greek philosopher found at the Villa dei Quintili in Rome during the last excavation campaign of 2017-2018. The portrait is undoubtedly a 2nd century CE copy of a Greek original. It has been reassembled from about twenty fragments and identified as the Epicurean philosopher Metrodorus of Lampsacus. To interpret the philosopher’s posture, comparison of this copy with the portrayal of Metrodorus in the Autun mosaic may be useful.

The portrait is undoubtedly a 2nd century CE copy of a Greek original. It has been reassembled from about twenty fragments and identified as the Epicurean philosopher Metrodorus of Lampsacus. To interpret the philosopher’s posture, comparison of this copy with the portrayal of Metrodorus in the Autun mosaic may be useful.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
