Gaston Paris: «caro collega» e «vecchio amico» di Ernesto Monaci. Analisi di un necrologio autografo inedito

The article proposes a reconstruction of the Academic and interpersonal relationship between Ernesto Monaci and Gaston Paris, through the analysis of several autograph papers preserved in Monaci’s private archives. It is a speech given by Monaci to his students two days after the death of Paris and was therefore developed as a commemoration in his honour. The examination of this autograph, characterized by an original empathetic component, absent in the obituary published in the Nuova Antologia, has made it possible – also thanks to the correspondence between the two philologists and other scattered notes by Monaci – to focus on both the exemplifying episodes of mutual professional esteem, as well as on the clues that would testify to their friendship. In retracing the evolution of this relationship, the essay also attempts to perform an embryonic reconstruction of the main occasions for meeting between Ernesto Monaci and Gaston Paris, as well as the probable contacts that the two had several months before the passing of the French philologist.
