European Union definitely set its priorities in the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy identifying islands as perfect site to implement innovative solutions to boost the transition. Nevertheless, high-penetration of non-dispatchable Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the grid are already causing technical issues to island electric grids making grid flexibility a central issue. Historically, power plants were used to supply flexibility to the grid. With the advent of RES, variability shifted from the demand side to the generation one and the opposite migration happened to flexibility agents. The present review paper discusses solutions that have been studied or implemented in insular contexts. The research deals with solutions that enhance the grid flexibility such as the use of different storage technologies and potential synergies offered by sector coupling solutions.

Abstract
The research deals with solutions that enhance the grid flexibility such as the use of different storage technologies and potential synergies offered by sector coupling solutions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
