With or Against Hobbes ? Religion, Nature and Society in Some Debates Between the 17th and 18th Centuries · In the history of historiographic images in the modern age, the profile of Spinoza has not always coincided with that of the advocate of libertas philosophandi. On the political use of religion and the question of ius circa sacra, in particular, a different image circulated : that of the Hobbesian Spinoza, the supporter of a strict and authoritarian absolutism. Some ambiguity was perhaps already in Spinoza’s texts : and criticism between the 17th and 18th centuries bears the mark of this kind of ambiguity, which was open to different and opposing interpretations.
