Considering the epochal worth of Erasmus of Rotterdam means studying not only his texts and works but also the institutions that enabled his ideas and ideals to spread. From this point of view, the case study of the Erasmusstiftung, a philanthropic foundation created from Erasmus’ inheritance in Basel, is of extraordinary interest. Managed by his close friend and heir Boniface Amerbach, it granted scholarships, donations, and economic aid to various categories of individuals, in particular young students, professors, schoolmasters, scholars from across Europe, and religious exiles, as well as offering charity and protection to society’s least privileged, such as women, widows, the disabled, and disenfranchised nobles. Lucia Felici’s Senza Frontiere. L’Europa di Erasmo (1538–1600) (“Without Borders. The Europe of Erasmus [1538–1600]”) offers valuable insights into this aspect of Erasmus’ legacy.

Abstract
The Europe of Erasmus [1538–1600]”) offers valuable insights into this aspect of Erasmus’ legacy.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
