Abstract

In 2022 Saburo Teshigawara won the prestigious Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement awarded by the Venice Dance Biennale. On that occasion, at the Teatro Malibran, the Japanese choreographer presented the world première of a highly original and intense version of one of the masterpieces of dance history: Petruška by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. In these notes, written immediately after attending the Venetian première, Vito Di Bernardi focuses on the dramaturgical composition of the performance. The observation ranges from the set design to the costumes, from the re-actualisation of the subject to the choreological analysis of the danced movement. Teshigawara’s performance is put in relation with Stravinsky-Fokine-Nižinsky’s Petruška (1911), with the aesthetic theories on puppetry by Heinrich von Kleist and Gordon Craig, with the vision of the Balinese Baris dancer who inspired Antonin Artaud in the 1930s.
