The study of aphorisms has been relegated to a rather narrow area of lexicology or historical philology. This subject, of great didactic interest, allows students in general and foreign language students, in particular, to come into contact with culturally marked elements, both at the synchronic and diachronic levels. Furthermore, as has been previously stated (Salomão 2021), phraseology and idioms in general represent one of the main difficulties for the apprentice translator, and not only, an issue to be considered from a didactic-linguistic point of view with greater attention. Among the various theoretical propositions recently addressing this issue, the one that I consider the most interesting and productive is that of Dominique Mainguenau (2015). This study focuses on an nalysis of the mechanisms of the so-called secondary aphorizing enunciation in line with the Discourse Analysis proposal put forward by this French linguist. Our study begins by describing the field of study, presenting some examples of research already carried out using this model, and ends with a proposal regarding the literary genre in which the complex discursive context allows us to situate the issue in greater depth. The corpus is taken from the novel Esaú and Jacó (1908), by Machado de Assis, and is Brazilian Portuguese.
