In the coming years, the use of the HVDC circuit breakers will become a necessity in the “grids of the future” (basically multi-terminal HVDC grids). An obliged step is to test such equipment before to install it on the grids. Unfortunately, to date, there are no standards directly applicable for the HHB and for the HVDC circuit breakers in general even if an IEC Working Group is working on it. For such reason, the aim of this paper is to provide a type test protocol for the Hybrid HVDC Breaker (HHB) based on the very limited field returns and reduced available literature.
