La Mediolanum-Laus Pompeia. Da Via di Cesare a Via Porticata dei Valentiniani

In Caesar's time the city of Mediolanum was in full expansion after the establishment of the first urban core between the first and second decade of the 1st century BC. Cleverly exploiting the long strip of land between the Lambro and the Vettabbia, Caesar linked Mediolanum with Laus Pompeia, a city that guaranteed a junction on the Via Postumia connecting to Cremona and the Via Emilia via Placentia. The Mediolanum-Laus Pompeia road assumed in Late Antiquity the delicate role of main axis of connection with Rome, and the Valentinians focused on this road in their plan to monumentalise the city.

In età cesariana la città di Mediolanum era in piena espansione dopo la costituzione del primo nucleo urbano tra il primo e il secondo decennio del I secolo a.C. Sfruttando abilmente la lunga striscia di territorio compresa tra il Lambro e la Vettabbia Cesare collegò Mediolanum con Laus Pompeia, città che garantiva un innesto sulla via Postumia collegandosi a Cremona e sulla via Emilia passando per Placentia. La via Mediolanum-Laus Pompeia assume nella Tarda Antichità il delicato ruolo di principale asse di collegamento con Roma, e su questa via i Valentiniani puntano nel piano di monumentalizzazione della città.
