Tra Roma e Ostia. I Benedettini e la loro influenza sulla città e sul territorio

This study traces the events of some monastic complexes of the Benedictine Order widespread, in a capillary way, in the Roman context; these are architectural systems which, although today in an extremely fragmented and altered context, still make it possible to identify the peculiar characteristics of their settlement and of the control exercised both within the city and in the territory. One of the most accurate sources for this reading is the Catasto of Alessandrino (1660), a document which, despite having an economic-rates collection purpose, shows, upon careful reading, a large amount of data and information for the knowledge of the territory in its various manifestations. The contribution investigates, through historical cartography and cadastral maps, the presence in the Agro Romano of various properties dependent on the large religious institutions already present in the urban area. Specifically, the domain of the study is the territory between Rome and the mouth of the Tiber, an area defined and influenced by the two consular routes, the Via Ostiense and the Via Portuense which run along the river. It is a huge heritage, linked above all to the Benedictine Order, characterized not only, and exclusively, by production functions but also by strategies for the control and management of waterways and landways. The various large estates located are compared with the current cartography and with historical, contemporary and satellite aerial photos, to find signs and traces that are still legible as well as the uses of the properties, often coinciding with the pre-existing destination of the land. A work of historical mending, therefore, which through the elaboration of thematic maps, attempts to arrive at coherent hypotheses on the logic of urban diffusion and territorial allocation of the main religious orders.

Il contributo ripercorre le vicende di alcuni complessi monastici dell’Ordine benedettino in ambito romano; si tratta di di veri e propri ‘sistemi’ urbani che, sebbene oggi in un contesto estremamente frammentario e alterato, rendono comunque ancora possibile identificare oltre che le dinamiche d’insediamento anche i meccanismi di controllo esercitati sia all’interno della città sia nel territorio extraurbano. Si analizzano le vicende di due chiese del rione Trastevere: S. Benedetto in Piscinula e S. Cecilia. Altresì, il settore compreso tra Roma e la foce del Tevere, ambito territoriale definito da due percorsi consolari, la Via Ostiense e la Via Portuense, che costeggiano il fiume, lungo le cui sponde sono localizzati i possedimenti dei benedettini romani, connotati non solo da funzioni produttive ma anche da una posizione strategica di controllo e gestione delle vie d’acqua e di terra. La committenza ha da sempre condizionato e indirizzato l’architettura sia nella sua fase progettuale e di cantiere sia nella sua conservazione, tenuto conto delle vicende storiche coeve, della situazione economica al contorno e della cultura architettonica del momento. Un ordine religioso è tra i committenti più esigenti perché, vivendo secondo precisi dogmi, richiede un’architettura che identifichi le proprie necessità. I due tomi raccolgono contributi che affrontano le modalità in cui gli ordini e le congregazioni religiose, tra Medioevo ed Età Moderna, hanno rappresentato sé stessi tramite l’arte e l’architettura. Gli atti sono frutto del convegno, svolto a maggio 2021, organizzato in seno alle molteplici attività complementari che il Dottorato di Storia, Disegno e Restauro dell’Architettura di Sapienza Università di Roma offre per la formazione accademica integrando i tre distinti, ma affini, settori disciplinari.
