Giancarlo De Carlo, architect, urban planner, essayist was among the most complex and committed protagonists of Italian and international architectural culture, in second half of the twentieth century. The interest in his figure is confirmed by the numerous initiatives and publications around the 100th anniversary of his birth. Central to De Carlo’s thought and work is the relationship between the human being, the environment and the community. A review of the critical interpretation of his work, which goes beyond the “architecture of participation”, can fruitfully open up research paths on current topics. For example: the inseparable link between architecture and urban planning; the relationship between existential experience and built space in the design of the landscape, of the city, of historic centres; the project for the reuse of existing buildings; the ability to cultivate a vision of architecture, or “designing thinking about the future”, to “open processes rather than close solutions”.

Abstract
Giancarlo De Carlo, architect, urban planner, essayist was among the most complex and committed protagonists of Italian and international architectural culture, in second half of the twentieth century. The interest in his figure is confirmed by the numerous initiatives and publications around the 100th anniversary of his birth. Central to De Carlo’s thought and work is the relationship between the human being, the environment and the community. A review of the critical interpretation of his work, which goes beyond the “architecture of participation”, can fruitfully open up research paths on current topics. For example: the inseparable link between architecture and urban planning; the relationship between existential experience and built space in the design of the landscape, of the city, of historic centres; the project for the reuse of existing buildings; the ability to cultivate a vision of architecture, or “designing thinking about the future”, to “open processes rather than close solutions”.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
