The purpose of the essay is to find and discuss all the references to the figure and work of Dante in Cesare Pavese’s Il mestiere di vivere. Pavese’s diary is in fact particularly rich in references to Dante’s work and figure, with the first reference dating back to August 4 1935, when Cesare Pavese was confined to Brancaleone Calabro for political reasons, and the last one dating back to 9 March 1948, about two years before the suicide of the author. Pavese’s notes show an all-round interest in the figure of Dante: sometimes he expresses this interest in the form of brief and precise comments to the Commedia, and sometimes – formulating more general reflections – he expresses it by comparing Dante with other great authors of European literature, such as Shakespeare and Baudelaire.

Abstract
The purpose of the essay is to find and discuss all the references to the figure and work of Dante in Cesare Pavese’s Il mestiere di vivere. Pavese’s diary is in fact particularly rich in references to Dante’s work and figure, with the first reference dating back to August 4 1935, when Cesare Pavese was confined to Brancaleone Calabro for political reasons, and the last one dating back to 9 March 1948, about two years before the suicide of the author. Pavese’s notes show an all-round interest in the figure of Dante: sometimes he expresses this interest in the form of brief and precise comments to the Commedia, and sometimes – formulating more general reflections – he expresses it by comparing Dante with other great authors of European literature, such as Shakespeare and Baudelaire.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
