Abstract
In 1858 G. B. Guidi, owner of the area on the east side of the Thermae Antoninianae, decided to carry out an archaeological excavation on his property, aware that the Horti Asiniani were supposed to lay in that area. The first trench revealed the presence of an ancient domus. Further excavations were carried out between 1858 and 1866, bringing to light part of an extensive two-floor private house built in the Ha- drianic period, with some changes occurring in the Antonine period. The domus was not completely unear- thed, but many pavements (mosaics and opus sectile) and wall paintings were discovered and described by several archaeologists. Unfortunately, the domus was badly damaged by a flood in 1870. Only as recently as 1970 and 1975 did the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma arrange the detachment of some frescoes. Later on, a collapse due to the bad condition of the domus made the area inaccessible. The aim of this paper is to collect and analyse the data at our disposal, providing a global view of one of the rare domus of the Hadrianic period found in the city of Rome.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
