IL BASAMENTO PRESSO L'ANGOLO NORD OVEST DELL'OLYMPIEION DI ATENE

The excavations of 1861 in the northwest corner of the Olympieion brought to light a semicircular base implantedon the external façade of the enclosure, facing the Arch of Hadrian. The structure has been interpreted as an entrance stairway or as a tower of Valerian’s fortication system. A new study oers the possibility of advancing a new functional hypothesis and reconstructing the links between the structure and the surrounding monumental structures

Gli scavi del 1861 presso l’angolo nord ovest dell’Olympieion portarono alla luce un basamento semicircolare impiantato sulla facciata esterna del recinto, di fronte all’arco di Adriano. Il monumento è stato interpretato come scalinata di accesso oppure come una torre del sistema di forticazioni di Valeriano. Uno studio aggiornato ore la possibilità di avanzare una nuova ipotesi funzionale e di ricostruire i collegamenti tra la struttura e le evidenze monumentale circostanti
