Starting with the famous Bildungsroman "Anton Reiser" by Karl Philipp Moritz, the article investigates the role of the new European bourgeois and Enlightenment subjectivity on the one hand by placing it in the groove of the religious tradition of the reversal of consciousness, and on the other hand by recognising it as a central testimony to its 'staging' in theatrical terms.
