American Itineraries in Rome and the Campagna

The paper focuses on the identification of the main places frequented by American artists from the end of the 1760s up to the third decade of the following century. Beginning with the arrival of Benjamin West and the partnership established with Cardinal Alessandro Albani, up to the Roman experiences of Thomas Cole and Thomas Crawford, the North American artistic milieu seems to revolve around the Piazza di Spagna area, in close contact with the habitual visitors to the Caffè degli Inglesi, the Caffè Greco and the Serny inn, aligning with the trend common to other foreign communities during the golden age of the Grand Tour. Particular attention will be paid, on the one hand, to the places of study and cultural transmission (museums, monuments , academies, studios, galleries), on the other the places of meeting, comparison and interdisciplinary exchange (inns, lounges, theatres, concert halls). The latter turn out to be no less important than the former, also because they constitute the basis for contacts with other Italian and foreign artists, who will have a fundamental influence on the articulation of artistic and architectural languages ​​in the young US confederacy.

Il contributo si incentra sull’individuazione dei principali luoghi frequentati dagli artisti statunitensi dalla fine degli anni Sessanta del Settecento fino al terzo decennio del secolo seguente. Ad iniziare dall’arrivo di Benjamin West e del sodalizio instaurato con il cardinale Alessandro Albani, sino alle esperienze romane di Thomas Cole e Thomas Crawford, l’ambiente artistico nordamericano sembra ruotare attorno alla zona di piazza di Spagna, in stretto contatto con gli abituali frequentatori del Caffè degli Inglesi, del Caffè Greco e della locanda Serny, allineandosi alla tendenza comune ad altre comunità straniere durante il periodo aureo del Grand Tour. Oggetto di particolare attenzione saranno da una parte i luoghi dello studio e della trasmissione culturale (musei, monumenti, accademie, studi, gallerie), dall’altra i luoghi dell’incontro, del confronto e dello scambio interdisciplinare (locande, salotti, teatri, sale da concerto). Questi ultimi si rivelano non meno importanti dei primi, anche perché costituiscono la base per i contatti con altri artisti, italiani e stranieri, che avranno una fondamentale influenza sull’articolazione dei linguaggi artistici e architettonici nella giovane confederazione statunitense.
