Considering the growing process of the political and social engagement of museums, the essay stresses the need to adopt new cultural and organizing perspectives to museum education. The overcoming of the post-modern era urges to invert the basic approach of the Generic Learning Outcomes (glo), by reaffirming the importance of an ex-ante definition of learning goals from the part of museums, with a main focus on life skills and citizenship competences. International documents are discussed in order to analyse the new challenges museums are asked to take up, coherently with a context of multicultural society. On these premises, the contribution presents for the first time the structure of life-m (Learning Impact Framework for the Engagement of Museums), a brand-new tool for the quality measurement of learning experiences of adults and school groups.
