The subject of this Note is a bronze· ram belonging to a Carthaginian ship which sank during the battle against the Romans not far from the coast of western Sicily (241 B.C.). The ram was found in the sea together with several Roman rams after the place of the naval battle was identified about ten years ago. The technical features of the ram are described; its peculiarities reveal the high level of Punic nautical science. A Punic inscription cut on the superior surface of the ram is of great importance because the god Baal is invoked to direct the ram against the adversary ship; such invocation is however expressed in a highly literary form.

Abstract
The subject of this Note is a bronze· ram belonging to a Carthaginian ship which sank during the battle against the Romans not far from the coast of western Sicily (241 B.C.). The ram was found in the sea together with several Roman rams after the place of the naval battle was identified about ten years ago. The technical features of the ram are described; its peculiarities reveal the high level of Punic nautical science. A Punic inscription cut on the superior surface of the ram is of great importance because the god Baal is invoked to direct the ram against the adversary ship; such invocation is however expressed in a highly literary form.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
