La Ghost City di Gibellina trasformata in opera di Land Art con il Grande Cretto di Alberto Burri

Gibellina (Trapani) became a Ghost City following the earthquake (6.4 on the Richter magnitude scale) occurred in the Belice Valley on 14-15 January 1968. The plan for reconstruction provided the radical transformation of the area, with the construction of a new urban center, built in the 1970s, 18 km from the previous one. In the 1980s the old Gibellina was transformed into a piece of Land Art by Alberto Burri (1915-1995) with the Grande Cretto, completed in 2015. The Grande Cretto was deeply criticized for the radical and irreversible intervention. Over time, the desire to restore it, as well as complete it, has emerged. This paper aims to highlight how in the old city, kept separate from the new one, different instances can be identified. At the same time, this paper considers it necessary to combine different instances, from those of a geological and historical nature, to the artistic and aesthetic, as well as conservative and environmental ones, which have emerged over time.

Gibellina (Trapani) è divenuta una Ghost City a seguito del sisma (magnitudo 6,4 scala Richter) avvenuto tra 14 e 15 gennaio 1968 nella Valle del Belice. Il successivo piano di ricostruzione ha previsto la trasformazione radicale dell’intera zona, con la costruzione di un nuovo centro urbano, edificato dagli anni ’70, a 18 km dal precedente. Negli anni ’80 la vecchia Gibellina è stata trasformata in opera di Land Art con il Grande Cretto di Alberto Burri (1915-1995), completato nel 2015, che è stato profondamente criticato per aver operato un intervento radicale e irreversibile. Nel tempo è emersa la volontà di restaurarlo, oltre che completarlo. Con il presente contributo si propone di mettere in luce come nella vecchia città, mantenuta separata dalla nuova, siano individuabili istanze diverse che vanno necessariamente coniugate, da quelle di ordine geologico e storico, a quelle artistiche ed estetiche, nonché conservative e ambientali, emerse nel corso del tempo.
