The concept of the Commons as a fundamental requirement for democracy dates back to ancient Greece and has been the core of social and economic debate over the centuries. In 1968 Garrett Har-din proposed his theory about the tragedy of the Commons to which Elinor Ostrom answered with a vision of alternative economic models to solve the tragedy, based on cooperation and education. Many other scientists explained the crucial role of knowledge for the common good, a concept that today is strictly linked to sustainable development and goals of the Agenda 2030. Libraries have an important role and responsibility in helping to shape a sustainable society for the common good. The article discusses the positioning of libraries in this scenario
