The One-Room House | La casa dell’unica stanza

Velvet Studio's "Prima" is part of the broad design investigation of the existing, where spatiality and architectural rules are updated to be adapted to new uses. "Prima" is the name of the intervention that identifies "project 0" of a series of suite houses in Paris, and in this case, involves the re-use of a barn, attached to a military guesthouse, into a dwelling house. The re-use of the barn was investigated through two opposing and collaborating design strategies; the existing, i.e. the architectural box of the barn is substantially maintained in its volumetry, and through the use of white it becomes the backdrop for a new narrative. On the contrary, an eccentric matrix of episodic events constructs the domestic architecture of the single room: a mirrored corridor duplicating the space leads from the outside of the access courtyard towards the inside; a compression of the volume into two 'subspaces' organises the section where the kitchen is located on the entrance floor and, on the upper floor, the bedroom enclosed by a bookcase dominating the double volume from above; a dematerialised and diffuse staircase connects the two levels of the house. The newly occupied fireplace becomes the centre of the space, inlaid with complex materials and textures. "Prima" is a domestic architecture that, in its relationship with the existing, chooses detachment from dialogue through the use of white and undertakes the interlocking of more complex and unprecedented spatial relationships contained in a single room.

“Prima” di Velvet Studio si colloca nell’ampia indagine progettuale sull’esistente dove spazialità e regole architettoniche vengono aggiornate per essere adattate a nuovi usi. “Prima” è il nome dell’intervento che identifica il “progetto 0” di una serie di suite houses a Parigi, e in questo caso, coinvolge il re-uso di un fienile, annesso a una foresteria militare, in una casa d’abitazione. Il re-uso del fienile è stato indagato attraverso due strategie progettuali opposte e collaboranti; l’esistente, cioè la scatola architettonica del fienile viene sostanzialmente mantenuta nella sua volumetria, e attraverso l’uso del bianco diventa il fondale di una nuova narrazione. Al contrario, un’eccentrica matrice di eventi episodici costruisce l’architettura domestica dell’unica stanza: un corridoio a specchio che duplica lo spazio conduce dall’esterno del cortile d’accesso verso l’interno; una compressione del volume in due “sottospazi” organizza la sezione dove trovano luogo la cucina al piano d’accesso e, al piano superiore, la stanza della notte chiusa da libreria che domina il doppio volume dall’alto; una scala smaterializzata e diffusa connette i due livelli della casa. Il camino nuovamente occupato diventa il centro dello spazio, intarsiato da materiali e trame complesse. “Prima” è un’architettura domestica che, nel rapporto con l’esistente, sceglie il distacco dal dialogo attraverso l’uso del bianco e intraprende l’incastro di più complessi e inediti rapporti spaziali contenuti in un’unica stanza.
