Abstract

By analysing the history of the economic evolution, it can be observed how all the industrial revolutions have led to great economic, social and cultural growth. The revolution we are witnessing, known as digital transformation or Industry 4.0, has its main focus in the complete transformation of the value chain, through the use of new enabling technologies and the digitalisation of the entire organizational apparatus. The effect of these innovative technologies are often disruptive and, although they confer quali!able competitive bene!ts and advantages, many companies often find themselves unprepared to face this revolution. This work aims to analyse and understanding how digital transformation, and all the aspects connected to it, from the changes in the industrial paradigm, to the economic and social effects, up to the radical transformation of the company as we know it, impact on the banking world. Through an empirical survey, which involves companies in the banking sector operating on the national territory, this study investigates how the companies from the financial sector are going through the digitalisation process, how many investments and funds they dedicate to research and innovation, the resulting bene!ts, challenges and opportunities encountered in the implementation of new technologies for the modernization of the entire organizational system. The analysis carried out shows the growing awareness of companies operating in the sector about the digitalisation process and the potential bene!ts deriving from this new paradigm. The need to integrate physical and online channels has led to the progressive evolution of traditional formats and strategies. If on the one hand the bene!ts that can be obtained from digital technologies are perceptible in various areas of activity, there are still some criticalities linked mainly to the procurement of highly quali!ed human resources and the high costs of equipments.
