Three years after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic [Citation1,Citation2], there are several concerns about a new potential threat – the Avian Influenza A H5N1. Three recent cases of human infection by H5N1 have highlighted the possibility that a new spillover event may have occurred, setting the stage for the emergence of a new human epidemic. In such a context, in this commentary we discuss several considerations from a genetic point of view.

Abstract
Three years after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic [Citation1,Citation2], there are several concerns about a new potential threat – the Avian Influenza A H5N1. Three recent cases of human infection by H5N1 have highlighted the possibility that a new spillover event may have occurred, setting the stage for the emergence of a new human epidemic. In such a context, in this commentary we discuss several considerations from a genetic point of view.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
