The essay traces the history of 'A' and the role played by Bruno Zevi in giving shape to the architecture weekly dedicated to the reconstruction of cities and houses. Conceived in 1945 in an Italy that had just come out of the war, 'A' is a different magazine that looks at the everyday life and social and political problems of the country and takes a stand in favour of a concrete architecture that is close to the people. Journalism is the style of the magazine, which presents articles and photo reports, not just projects. "A", as Zevi writes, stands for Actuality, Housing, Architecture but also Accuse, Love... and its lexicon is the leitmotif of the essay, which traces its history through the aspects that have most affected the magazine's layout and structure: the exchange of letters with Carlo Pagani and Lina Bo; Bruno Zevi's Actionism; the influence of MSA and APAO; the international character of the surveys; the link between text and image. The experience of 'A', published for only 9 issues from February to October 1946, marked other publishing ventures by Zevi, including Architettura. Chronicles and History that are reminiscent of it both in format and content. But above all, "A" was the beginning of the friendship with Lina Bo Bardi that would turn into an intense exchange of opinions on architecture from which the Letters from Brazil would be born.

Il saggio ripercorre la vicenda di “A” e il ruolo avuto da Bruno Zevi nell’impostazione del settimanale di architettura dedicato alla ricostruzione delle città e delle case. Concepita nel 1945 in un’Italia appena uscita dalla guerra, "A" è una rivista diversa che guarda alla vita quotidiana e ai problemi sociali e politici del Paese e prende posizione in favore di un’architettura concreta e vicina alle persone. La cronaca è lo stile della rivista che ospita articoli e reportage fotografici e non soltanto progetti. “A”, come scrive Zevi, significa Attualità, Abitazione, Architettura ma anche Accusa, Amore… ed è il suo lessico il filo conduttore del saggio che ne ripercorre la vicenda attraverso gli aspetti che hanno maggiormente inciso sull’impostazione e la struttura della rivista: lo scambio epistolare con Carlo Pagani e Lina Bo; l’azionismo di Bruno Zevi; l’influenza di MSA e APAO; il carattere internazionale delle inchieste; l’intreccio tra testo e immagine. L’esperienza di “A”, pubblicata per soli 9 numeri dal febbraio a ottobre 1946, segna altre iniziative editoriali di Zevi, tra cui anche Architettura. Cronache e Storia che la ricordano sia nel formato che nei contenuti. Ma soprattutto “A” è stata l’inizio dell’amicizia con Lina Bo Bardi che si tramuterà in un intenso rapporto di opinioni sull’architettura da cui nasceranno le Lettere dal Brasile.
