Abstract · The Problem of Atheism in Franciscus Cuperus (1629-1691) · Arcana atheismi revelata (1676) is the best-known work of the Socinian theologian and philosopher Cuperus (Frans Kuyper). The reason the book was to become widely known in the following centuries lies in the radically innovative nature of Cuperus’ project, for he intended to refute atheism, but from a position that emphasised the material and finite nature of God and defended the impossibility of a rational approach to religion. This thesis generated a considerable debate as it targeted not only atheism, but also rational theology.
