This paper explores the conditions that made possible the encounter between the French Revolution and the pastoral academies, notably the Arcadia in Rome and the Blumenorden in Nuremberg. We suggest that the interest of the French revolutionaries in the pastoral academies can be explained by the democratic constitution of the latter. In the first part, we will study the political organization of the Academy of Arcadia, as established by the Leges et Institutiones of 1696; we will see that the academy participated in the elaboration of the jusnaturalist and contractualist theories that were the basis of the constitutions of the French First Republic. In a second part, we will show that the statutes (1793) of the Order of Flowers remained faithful to the ancient models of the Athenian and Roman democracies, while revealing some words and ideas belonging to the contemporary debate. Finally, we will try to find out whether there was an equivalent of the citizen-shepherd invented by the academies in literary pastoral work: we will see that Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's democratic shepherds (1781 and 1788) may have encouraged a conciliation between the pastoral and the Revolution. Finally, the article contains a list of the pastoral academies identified to date in France, Italy and Germany.

Abstract
Finally, the article contains a list of the pastoral academies identified to date in France, Italy and Germany.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
