The conservation of the writings on the wall in Via Pallone (Verona, Italy), represents a challenge under several points of view and has required focused research. A first research task was the characterization of the paint materials, the evaluation of the conditions of the paintings and of the wall, and in parallel the assessment of the risk factors and of threatening environmental parameters. A second task was an ageing study on the spray paints used by the artists, aimed to investigate specific degradation phenomena involving these poorly studied materials. The conservation intervention has stimulated an ethical evaluation of the guidelines for the preservation and restoration of street art writings, that usually, according to the intentions of street art artists, are not produced to be durable. For this purpose, several factors were taken into account such as: aims and ideas of the artists; physical and social environment where the artworks are located; esthetical and social values. The conservation strategy was defined including both technical and theoretical aspects, and balancing the need of preserving the complex and fragile artworks, that are part of the cultural heritage of the town, with the necessity of respecting the artists's approach.
