The fast development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and of the European electricity market has resulted in increasingly large changes in the operation of power systems. Therefore, transmission system design has to look beyond traditional boundaries and to progress towards new solutions. The present paper deals with the main results of a research activity, made with the support of the Italian TSO (TERNA), based on a wide international review, aimed to get an international benchmarking on the CBAs included in the planning process of different TSOs. Starting from the results of the benchmarking, some proposals of revision of the existing benefit indicators and on new benefit indicators are formulated and tested, in reference to the future operation scenarios for the Italian transmission grid.

Abstract
