The Storia ed analisi degli antichi romanzi di cavalleria e dei poemi romanzeschi d’Italia by Giulio Ferrario, published in Milan in 1828, is almost completely ignored nowadays. This work, however, is a significant testimony to the studies devoted to “chivalric romance” in the Romantic period. The analysis of the context of its production, its genesis and the relationship with Pierre-Louis Ginguené’s Histoire littéraire d’Italie is the first step of research on the reception of medieval “romance” between the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
