Oral fluid has gained acceptance over the past decades as an alternative biological matrix over blood and urine for Driving Under the Influence of Drugs investigations (DUID) and being the field of salivary diagnostics very promising, it has expanded into detection of cancer, heart and infectious diseases, based on the detection of specific biomarkers. Even if extremely simple, sample collection is a waste generator stage because of the means of disposable devices made in plastics which generally involve collection on absorbent material (e.g., foam pad). Commercial devices offer the advantage of improved stability however issues that may arise include the incomplete desorption of lipophilic drugs or the disparate volume collected from different subjects.
