In outlining the different phases of the complex process of the Chinese reception of Foucault’s thoughts, this essay first focuses on the period of the Eighties, when in the context of ideological liberalization and openness to the West, Foucault’s works entered China. Then, the essay moves on to analyze the special fascination that Foucault exercised on the Chinese audiences during the late 1990s and early 2000s, when he gained popularity far beyond academic circles.
