Increase of power demand on existing DC traction lines may be covered by adding additional rectifier units in substations or by fitting in intermediate substations along the lines, both causing high investments. A cheaper solution is presented here consisting of an innovative DC booster provided with novel functions that has been studied in Italy. The performance of a substation equipped with the booster in various normal and abnormal system operation conditions has been simulated with good results.

Abstract

Increase of power demand on existing DC traction lines may be covered by adding additional rectifier units in substations or by fitting in intermediate substations along the lines, both causing high investments. A cheaper solution is presented here consisting of an innovative DC booster provided with novel functions that has been studied in Italy. The performance of a substation equipped with the booster in various normal and abnormal system operation conditions has been simulated with good results.
