Until recently the reception of Dante’s work in Portugal was impacted by the lack of a real school of Italian studies in that country. A polyglot elite ensured that his work was read in the original language, although the model established by Dante only began to be appreciated with the onset of Romanticism, with writers like Garrett, Antero de Quental and Eça de Queirós, unlike the case of Petrarch. This study examines the contribution of the best critics and scholars and proposes a brief but illuminating comparison of the four principal translations from the 20th and 21st centuries. It focuses on translation models and strategies, giving value to the historical richness of the Portuguese language, the vernacular form of which was established in the late 12th century. It will also consider the contribution of Italian Lusitanists to Dante studies in Portugal.
