Our understanding of the settlement patterns and of the diffusion of material culture during the Achaemenid period (550 BC-330 BC) outside Iran is still very partial and poses severe archaeological as well as socio-political problems, in particular in regard to the situation in the Middle Euphrates area. This paper takes into consideration the analysis of settlement patterns, pottery artifacts and other finds in order to make an assessment of what kind of control the central imperial administration may have exerted on this “peripheral” area.
