On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Nixon’s visit to China, the significance of that historic visit for today’s Sino US relations has become a topic of interest among the Chinese scholars of International Relations (IR). PRC-US relations, after all, have always had a privileged position in the Chinese thinking on international affairs: this essay aims to investigate the evolution of this debate, starting from the Maoist period, and then focusing on its orientation in the context of the post-Cold War, also taking into consideration its current research trends.
