From the Soviet Union’s implosion, the difficult social and economic context and military tensions with Azerbaijan contributed to the development of gender-based sex selective abortion practices in Armenia. The ratification of the Istanbul Convention by Armenia could represent an important improvement of the situation to fight against prenatal control of the female sex of the fetuses.
