Narrating the Transnational Trajectories and Transgender Performances of the Sworn Virgin

This article explores how two recent configurations of the Albanian sworn virgin prompt a reflection on the intersection of transgender discourses with questions of transnational mobility. Elvira Dones’s novel Vergine giurata and its eponymous cinematic adaptation (directed by Laura Bispuri) imagine in diverging ways the material and symbolic disruptions that occur when this tribally sanctioned figure leaves Albania for another nation. Novel and film suggest to different degrees how this distinctive transgender figure challenges binary regimes of heteronormativity and the powerknowledge systems underpinning them, revealing contrasting investments in the possibilities of the sworn virgin’s integration into the respective migratory settings.

Il presente articolo esplora i modi in cui due recenti configurazioni della vergine giurata albanese promuovono una riflessione sull’intersezione tra il discorso sulla transizione di genere e le questioni riguardanti la mobilità transnazionale. Il romanzo di Elvira Dones Vergine giurata e l’adattamento cinematografico dallo stesso titolo (per la regia di Laura Bispuri) immaginano in modi diversi le fratture materiali e simboliche che si generano quando una vergine giurata lascia l’Albania per recarsi in un’altra nazione. Il romanzo e il film suggeriscono, anche se in modalità diverse, che la figura della persona transgenere metta in discussione il sistema binario dell’eteronormatività e quello di potere-conoscenza, rivelando l’esistenza di investimenti contrastanti nelle possiblità di integrazione della vergine giurata nei luoghi di arrivo della migrazione.
