During the 17th and 18th centuries, Romagna’s sacred architecture boasted numerous renovations characterized by a general good executive quality. Generally, the architects involved were local master builders or – at most – aristocratic amateurs, both probably educated in Rome or at least inspired by Roman Baroque experiments. Consequently, their activity led to an extraordinary equilibrium between tradition and modernity, which is rare in other areas of the Papal States. To investigate this development, it is possible to assume the emblematic case of the Carmelite churches. Cesena, Ravenna, Forlì, Medicina, Imola and Lugo were the places where this new typology of religious architecture took place, producing exceptional artefacts which gives us the opportunity to understand in detail the cultural growth of the region. The counter-reformist model was not abandoned but, gradually, adapted to new celebration needs, which completely revolutionized the final effect. Applying rich decoration motifs to their austere single nave churches, the Carmelite friars pointed out an average style which was the very image of the local lifestyle.
Nell’ambito dell’architettura barocca romagnola si possono annoverare interventi eccezionali – i quali videro la partecipazione dei principali progettisti dell’epoca – e numerose opere di media rappresentatività, esito di una diffusa qualità esecutiva sostenuta da operatori locali capaci, solitamente istruitisi a Roma. Tale singolarità sviluppò un’architettura in cui tradizione e innovazione raggiunsero un simbiotico bilanciamento, raramente riscontrabile nelle aree più periferiche dello Stato Pontificio. In particolare, l’edilizia sacra fu il terreno di queste sperimentazioni, giacché molti luoghi di culto fra la fine del Seicento e la discesa delle truppe giacobine a fine Settecento vennero aggiornati per soddisfare le rinnovate esigenze liturgiche del cattolicesimo emerse all’indomani delle paci di Vestfalia (1648). Non esistendo molti studi settoriali sul tema, pare quindi non privo di senso ripercorrere questa crescit attraverso l’analisi di un caso emblematico quale quello dell’Ordo Fratrum Beatissimae Mariae Virginis de Monte Carmelo, il cui aggiornamento del patrimonio romagnolo fu tanto consistente quanto distribuito lungo tutto l’arco cronologico considerato.
