Subject to conflicting interpretations, Giuseppe Sardi (1688-1770) played a significant role in the development of late Baroque architecture, especially in the first decades of the 18th century. Qualified as both a simple master builder as well as an accomplished architect, surely, he was one of the most original heirs of Borromini’s experimentalism, but not unrelated to the new instances of neo-16th-century clarity. And among his most significant achievements, it seems possible to add now the church of St. Eutizio in Soriano nel Cimino. Sponsored by the Albani family during the reign of Pope Clement XI (1700-1721), this sacred building seems to be in fact the result of a precise balancing act between the need of magnificence and the reduced investment capacity of that time, introducing unexpected facts to consider.
