The implementation of aids to navigation and information systems to support logistics, port operations and communication between the various operators responds to security needs but has a fundamental role also for the development and competitiveness of the ports. The use of these systems, which are more and more enhanced and able to at- tend to different functions whose responsibilities involve numerous entities, represents a very precise perspective that coincides with the evolution of the modern concept of port. At the basis of all these com- plex processes there is a precise economic aspiration fueled by the need of optimizing the use of port infrastructures. Precisely in this sense, the connection between navigation aid systems, intended in an evolu- tionary perspective, and the topics of planning, subdivision and assi- gnment of port areas must be understood.
