La sostenibilidad como fenómeno cultural. Estrategias territoriales en el Jardín de las Camándulas

The Garden of Lies, an academic project, tried to fit a sustainable approach into a degraded and peripheral urban space in Madrid: the Cuatro Vientos aerodrome. However, the analysis of the surrounding spaces, such as an early 20th century hospital, showed the possibility of territorial regeneration as a project strategy. The process revealed many inconsistencies about sustainability, motivating a new stance. The analysis carried out by Umberto Eco for the media and mass culture can also embrace this social issue as a cultural element. It is also possible to discover two opposing ideas ("apocalyptic or corporate" and "integrated or cooperative") on climate change and sustainability, often utopian or dystopian visions. The autonomy of an academic project from architecture, enables another form of expression that can agitate and discomfort. This possibility would denounce the lack of a precise position in a crucial conjuncture that does not seem to have a solution.
