“Come la pelle dei serpenti”. Lo spazio 'barbaro'. La terra dell’acqua

In the “barbaric” space of Fenoglio’s short fiction, and more particularly in that of the so-called Racconti del parentado (“Tales of the Parentage”) – immersed as they are in a sort of murmuring and collective song of (and from) the earth, – an aquatic soul comes to light insistently, as a sucking, swirling, dissolving or even apocalyptic element, charged with a blind capacity for fecundation that seems to coincide with its own destructiveness. And the attraction to the river and its whirlpool, the iridescent light of “snakeskin” emanating from its bottom, is perhaps the filigree that unites, invisibly, the subjects and destinies sung in that long and tortuous narrative cycle.

Nello spazio “barbaro” della narrativa breve di Fenoglio, e più in particolare in quella dei cosiddetti Racconti del parentado immersi come essi sono in una sorta di mormorante e collettivo canto della (e dalla) terra, insistente viene in luce un’anima acquatica, come elemento risucchiante, vorticoso, dissolutorio o persino apocalittico, carico d’una cieca capacità di fecondazione che sembra coincidere con la sua stessa distruttività. E l’attrazione al fiume e al suo gorgo, la cangiante luce di “pelle di serpente” che si promana dal suo fondo, è forse la filigrana che unisce, invisibilmente, le materie e i destini cantati in quel lungo e tortuoso ciclo narrativo.
