It is suggested that variations in EEG amplitude and synchronization cannot express hemispheric functional asymmetries during sleep and that EPs or regional cerebral blood-flow measures would be better indicators.

Abstract

Hypothesized an overall predominance of right hemisphere in the REM stage as compared to non-REM stages and a progressive increase in left-hemisphere activity throughout different REM cycles as Ss approach final awakening and investigated these hypotheses using 5 right-handed Ss who slept 3 nights in the laboratory; the resulting paper was presented at the international symposium on sleep, dreaming, and hemispheric lateralization held in Lucca, Italy, in July 1983. Analysis of EEG and EOG recordings did not support either hypothesis. It is suggested that variations in EEG amplitude and synchronization cannot express hemispheric functional asymmetries during sleep and that EPs or regional cerebral blood-flow measures would be better indicators.
