Per Roma capitale. Varietà di progetti

For Rome the capital: variety of projects Simona Benedetti Considering the context of the urban expansion and transformation of the city of Rome, between the late nineteenth century and the first thirty years of the twentieth century, when the members joining Associazione Artistica fra i Cultori di Architettura (AACAR) played a main role, the contribution focuses on some of the most important urban projects carried out during the early decades of the twentieth century, revealing a significant urban quality, a peculiar characteristic of that period. This quality was developed by the operational expression based on variety, alternation, diversity, multiplicity, variation, plurality, organicity, at different scales: designing a road network with different widths, introducing squares and Bollettino del Centro di Studi per la Storia dell’Architettura - n.s. 5 (2021) 233 green areas, organizing plots, planning various building types, looking at the diversified interventions to be carried on for the expansion of the city of Rome. These characteristics are not fortuitous but a base in elaborating urban plans; they emerge in many writings and reports, both in «Annuari» disclosing the activity carried on by AACAR, and in some writings by main figures influencing the urban politics of that time. The contribution focuses on the most emblematic districts: piazza d’Armi Flaminio, garden-cities Aniene and Garbatella, Ostia Nuova settlement.
