To achieve sustainability goals while maintaining adequate technological performance, cement and concrete materials sector is implementing increasingly eco-friendly strategies that include the use of waste/recycled aggregates and reinforcements or the use of fiber-reinforced composite rebars to replace steel. In this context, the coatings science and surface engineering play a key role, exploring treatment or surface modifications suitable to ensure the proper integration of these materials into cementitious matrices. The present Editorial published in Coatings - Open Access Journal (MDPI, ISSN 2079-6412, IF: 3.236) offers an overview of the past and recent state of the art regarding surface treatments and coatings applied to “greener” cement-matrix composites. The manuscript aims to elucidate the purposes of our special issue “Functional Coatings and Surface Modifications in Cement-Matrix Composites”, a forum for researchers on the most recent advancements in this field of study.
