The paper offers an analysis of the rational mystical theology of Lessing through a reading of his 1777 dialogue The Testament of John. The dialogue presents the commandment of love as the crucial truth of the religion of Christ, revealing an anti-apocalyptic and anti-dogmatic stance. Through the analysis of the text’s sources and philosophical models, the paper shows how Origenian and Spinozian accents intertwine in Lessing’s irenic and universalizing thought.
