Hearing loss is the most common form of sensory impairment in humans, affecting people of all ages. The most recent Global Burden of Disease Study revealed that deafness is the fourth leading cause of years lived with disability and its prevalence continues to grow. Deafness has serious negative consequences for the individual and society, such as difficulties in communication leading to social isolation and withdrawaL.
