New processes confront our times that make it ever more difficult to distinguish boundaries in matter. In fact, we have never been so interconnected. Globalisation forces, environmental concerns, and the acceleration in digital interconnectivity pose new complexities in social life that challenge the very comprehensibility and communicability of our everyday experience. In this sense, we are called upon to reconsider the relationship between us and the other – or, put differently, the boundaries between ‘things’. In other words, what does it mean to be ‘human’ and, indeed, ‘nonhuman’ – in the 21st century?
