The basic idea behind the proposed invention is to dramatically simplify the OTN/WDM (Optical-Transport Network/Wavelength Division Multiplexing) network architecture by defining a switching node in which the OTN and WDM functionalities are integrated. The advantages of the proposed solution are: i) Tight integration of the OEO WDM switching layer and OTN switching layer using the same HW/chassis, to rationalize the HW and lower the footprint, costs, and power consumption; 2) reduction in complexity, number of ports of the switch fabric and number of interconnections.
